After legal facilities approved for removing monopoly on the airports in southern Albania, citizens of Gjirokastra are strongly lobbing for a terminal in their city. With support from local government,

An official petition supported as well by the local government expressed the first common request compiled by the Forum for the Airport, citizens and elected authorities, submitted to the government during may.

“An international airport does not serve to tourism. Giannina  and Corfu are nearby. Rather small airdromes are more suitable for tourism”, sais pilot Agim Muca.

Wile Bexhet Çobani, Forum member adds: “We want an airport serving to tourists and Gjirokastra citizens. This should be a regional airport with international function. Five million Euro are needed to make this airport functional. It will attract tourism”.

Gjirokastra aerodrome was built during the Second World War by Italians , while after 1944, the civil service in the southern airport was interrupted. A project on reactivation of the airport has been circulating for years now; this airport has all technical capacities to restart flights especially those with small capacity crafts.
