Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future All water springs in the town of Gjirokaster have been blocked by
hundreds of tons of waste material thrown by the residents in the last
10 years.
Environment specialists say that 3 tons of waste materials are thrown each day. The polluting materials block the riverbeds and cause floods in the town roads.
The Gjirokaster Municipality remains among those who cause most of the damages. Sources from the service sector say that the cleaning process has a cost that the Municipality cannot afford. The citizens also blame the low civil awareness.
The Municipality claims that they do not have legal spaces for obliging the payment of fines that could be placed to the violators. The authorities say that they have given many fines, but none of them has ever been collected.
