Gjirokaster Municipality increases taxes

The Budget of the Gjirokaster Municipality has been discussed in the
Municipal Council, since the Municipality has received a grant that is
15% less than predicted.

The budget distribution makes culture, education and sports a priority, while city cleaning and illumination, and a series of other public services for the citizens, will remain on the same level.

What spurred harsh debates in the council was the increased value of the local taxes with 10% for public illumination and cleaning, while the Green Tax, which didn’t exist before, is 600 ALL for all family members and businesses.

The budget has no improvement for the urban waste, compared to one year ago, which was one of the most sensitive problematic for the town, which justified the need for funds beyond the local capacities.

The taxi drivers and hotel owners will also pay more. The Municipality finance experts have justified this tax increase with the reduction of the local income, after the Ministry of Finances limited the fund and eliminated the construction taxes, which will not be collected anymore, after all construction permits have been suspended since September 2011. A 78 million ALL budget, different to the 91 million ALL, was approved by the Municipal Council with the consensus of all parties.
