The Gjirokaster Maternity, which brings to life 500 children each year,
is facing scandalous conditions. Built in 1980, the maternity has never
been recosntructed.

The walls have been destroyed by the humidity and the equipments are amortized, lacking of the minimal conditions for treating the patients.

In many cases, the broken window glasses have been replaced by the hospital staff with plastic, while the conditions of the areas where children are brought to life have scared more and more new mothers away from this hospital, choosing to travel to Yanina, Greece.

The Gjirokaster Maternity should cover the town of Gjirokaster itself, Tepelena, Permet and the entire communes of the district.

“Since its construction, there have been no repair works for this maternity. There are some arrangements under process with the Health Ministry, and the reconstruction could restart soon, but everything has its own difficulties”, declared Genci Sinoimeri, director of the hospital.

The Gjirokaster Maternity has 4 doctors and 11 nurses and consults more than 6000 women each year, and 500 babies are born annually.
