Businesses at the Gjirokaster Historic Center are relieved by 75% of their taxes.

Besides the increased number of tourists, authorities say that this has helped increasing the number of businesses and service operators, such as travel agencies, restaurants, hotels and family homes.

“The most important part of the business plan is that there is interest especially for the city’s museum. There is a high number of requests for business licenses, mainly for hotels”, said Asim Peta from the Gjirokaster municipality.

The number of businesses in non-tourist areas has remained the same for many years in the Gjirokaster municipality, although some bigger businesses with their headquarters in Tirana have opened their branches in Gjirokaster.

There are 1250 small businesses in Gjirokaster; 240 big businesses, 150 of which in rural areas.

Lazarat remains the most important rural area for businesses, having 80 in total. Cepos, Picari, Lunxheria and Odria have a lower number.
