Dozens of doctors and nurses at the Gjirokaster Regional Hospital went
on strike for one hour, do protest against the constant violence and
pressure in their profession.

Two days ago, relatives who arrived in hospital without any hopes of life have violated the emergency staff accusing them of not treating him on time. One doctor and two nurses were hit with punches and solid objects within the hospital premises.

Doctors say that the situation is becoming even more tense. They want protection from the law while they exert their profession, and the understanding of their public for their mission.

“There has been violence against an institution and against the white shirts. Through silence we want to declare our pain against this violence”, declared Murat Kaci.

“We understand the pain of the relatives and the problems that they have when they arrive in hospital, but this doesn’t mean that they should use violence against the staff”, declared the President of the Doctors’ order, Figali Kobuzi.

The hospital staff says that the violence episodes are repeated, and that there is also psychological pressure and all lawsuits against the violators have been rejected. They say that the strike will continue if the government will not take measures. The regional hospital “Omer Nishani” in gjirokaster is the biggest hospital center in the South of Albania, with 600 beds, offering services to at least 5 southern districts.
