Gjergj Ndreca returns from Greece

Gjergj Ndreca, the former political prisoner that attempted
self-immolation last week, returned this Wednesday evening to Tirana
after receiving medical care in Thessalonica.

He said that he traveled with an ambulance after he heard that the Tirana Court had ordered the strike’s dispersal.

In an interview for Top Channel he declared that the strike will continue. He answered to the accusations of Prime Minister Berisha, who said that he privatized a flour plant in Lac.

TCH: Why did you decide to get out of the hospital and return to Albania?

Ndreca: I took this decision after I heard that the other fellow strikers are being ordered by the court to stop the strike. I had to come here, despite the bad health conditions. The future of the strike will continue tomorrow, with all negotiations.

TCH: Prime Minister Berisha says that you are continuing a political strike. What’s your comment for this?

Ndreca: This is like the strike of 1973, in Spac, Mirdite. Politics is related with economy. We haven’t been part of politics in 22 years, besides Pjeter Arbnori who was a Parliament Speaker.

TCH: The Prime Minister declared that you and your brothers have privatized a flour plant. What is the truth?

Ndreca: We took this plant in an auction with Ndue Lushi, son of Zef Lushi, who lived in California for 50 years. From 85 million that was the original price set from Sali Berisha, we took it for 230 million with treasury bonds, which we took from our friends, all of them.

TCH: Debates on the media are asking where did Gjergj Ndreca find the courage to set himself on fire.

Ndreca: My mother, who today is 87, has burned the house three times because of the Secret Service, who were looking for my father. When you suffer this kind of persecution, and when you live in a family of six, with four children, and when the Prime Minister lies at you in broad daylight, you find the courage. He says that whoever is in a strike against him is a communist, a socialist.
