The Interior Minister of Germany said that asylum seekers should receive
a lower cash payment while waiting for the procedures, since what they
receive now is as much as a police officer’s salary in Kosovo or
Albania. The Minister says this is a way to reduce newcomers.
But experts say it cannot be realized, since it is established by the Constitutional Federal Court and remains a human dignity case.
Chancellor Merkel and all Presidents of German states are expected to declare Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro safe country of origin, since 99% of the requests from these countries is reduced.
According to Konrad Clewing, expert of Balkan at the Institution of Southeastern European Studies, this should not be done since the economic situation of Albania makes life difficult and forces them to seek asylum. He says that the unemployment in Albania is at 30%, in Kosovo even more, at 45-50%.
ProAsyl, the organization to defend the rights of asylum seekers, say this is not the right way. They say in Albania and Kosovo there is no rule of law as in the Western countries, and corruption prevails by making life difficult, especially the Roma community that suffer discrimination.
