Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The heavy precipitate floods have brought the city of Genova to its knees. All private
vehicles are banned from circulation; schools are closed and the
surrounding areas are being monitored carefully, while the heavy rains
have continued for the entire night.
The alarm is moving north and towards the center of the country, where heavy rains are expected. It is still too soon to assess the damages of the Genova floods, but preliminary calculations mount to 300 million EUR.
The biggest loss has been in human lives. This Friday, the water and mud that swept the city in a few minutes took the life of six persons, three of whom were Albanians. A young mother, the 28 year old Shpresa Djala and her two daughters, Janisa and Gioia, 1 and 8 years old, were removed lifeless from the entrance of an apartment building, where they had ran to hide.
The father of the family, Flamur Djala, owner of a construction firm, had been living in Italy for the last 15 years. He is still in shock by the tragic way he came to know the fate of his family. While the rescue workers were trying hard to save the woman and the two children, one of them called Flamur to help by giving him in his hands the body of a child, without knowing that it was Flamur’s daughter. The Albanian victims will be buried in Albania.
