Genetically modififed vegetables and fruits

Biological fruits and vegetables have disappeared from the Albanian
market. The qualitative products that could be found anywhere in the
‘90s are hard to find today.

The Albanian Market is facing another phenomenon. Some of the Albanian farmers who want to put their products on the market as soon as possible and as much as possible, inject pesticides to their plants which help fruits take the right color, but not the taste.

“There are very few farmers who bring biological products to market. Choosing the seed is based on the profitability. If he chooses a seed of low indicators, the final product will be weak. The farmer is interested to have a maximal product, and to this are added all other phenomena until the final product that goes to the consumer”, says Genc Juka, director of the National Food Agency.

Tomatoes give the best example for this technique, since it becomes red very fast while in the inside it is still green. The same goes for melons.

The National Food Agency is working for completing the tracking system that will help identifying the cultures that are sold in the market with pesticide content. Every farm will have a code and it will be easier for the inspectors to find the source of the modified product.

The destruction of the quality of agricultural products might end in 2013, after the moratorium against genetically modified products. In this time there will be a debate if the GM will be allowed in the Albanian agriculture.
