Fule visits Kosovo

Same as for Serbia, Kosovo has to reach an agreement in the dialogue
between the respective Prime Ministers, before they can sign the
Stabilization Association Agreement with Europe. This was the message
that the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule, brought to Kosovo
during his visit.

After meeting with the Kosovan authorities, Fule declared that the next days are decisive for Kosovo’s European future, referring to the meeting of March 20th between the Prime Ministers of Kosovo and Serbia.

“The next weeks should be decisive for Kosovo’s relations with the EU. An eventual agreement tomorrow with Belgrade could help preparing the terrain for positive conclusions from the European Council in the Ministers’ meeting on June for the SAA”, Fule declared.

The Commissioner for Enlargement presented his position regarding this issue in the meeting of the National Council for European Integration.

He appealed the Kosovo political class to support PM Thaci in the difficult decisions that he will have to take in Brussels. According to him, the benefits from this process are higher and should not be overlooked.

“The issues that are being discussed are complex and sensitive, and the decisions will be hard. However, it is essential to keep up with the good work, so that we can reach the right decisions. The benefits from the agreement are more important and cannot be overlooked, but Prime Minister Thaci cannot do this alone. In the dialogue process with Serbia, Thaci needs the support of all leaders, regardless of their differences. Any disagreement with Serbia requires a multiparty support. The dialogue and progress of Kosovo in the relations with Serbia is important for the future in the EU”, Fule underlined.

“Kosovo’s EU integration has no alternative. We promise to fulfil all the criteria presented in the integration process. The dialogue with Serbia is on an important phase, and this is the only way to build a peaceful relation”, President Atifete Jahjaga declared.

On the other hand, the Commissioner for enlargement valued the progress made by the Government of Kosovo in fulfilling the short-term criteria. He added that more work is needed in the fight against corruption, organized crime and the electoral reform progress.

Asked by journalists if the agreement with Serbia would change the position of the five European countries that have not recognized Kosovo’s independence, Fule declared that he hopes this could influence their decision positively.

Albin Kurti, leader of the Self Determination Movement, was absent in the meeting of the National Council for European Integrity. The AKR leader, Begjet Pacolli, left the room a few minutes before the meeting started, because he didn’t agree with the position of his seat.

Commissioner Fule met the Parliamentary Commission of Foreign Matters, led by the leader of the Self-Determination Movement, Albin Kurti, but it was held behind closed doors.
