For the Commission of Europe, the January 21st case offers the chance to
reinforce the rule of law and a normal functionality of democratic
institutions in Albania.
When asked by Top Channel if the Court of Appeal verdict was a “reliable process”, as the recent progress report required, and how would it be reflected in the next report, the press office of the Commissioner for Enlargement gives this explanation.
‘’The Commission is aware of Wednesday’s ruling of the Court of Appeal on the January 21st case. According to its standard practice the Commission is not in a position to comment court judgments.
The Commission notes that the prosecution may file an appeal of the verdict with the High Court. That said, the Commission reiterates that the case provides a chance to strengthen confidence in the proper functioning of Albania’s democratic institutions and the rule of law.
An independent, impartial and accountable judicial system, capable of ensuring fair trials, is a legitimate desire of Albanian citizens and an essential element of a strong rule of law – a prerequisite on the way to European Integration”, the answer says.
This case is expected to be mentioned in the progress-report of this October. The justice reform is one of the 12 priorities mentioned by the Commission for the candidate status and for opening the negotiations for Albania’s European Union accession.
