Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule, reacted 24 hours after
the Albanian majority decided to approve a referendum on the three
remaining laws that could open way to Albania’s EU candidate status.
Fule declared that the referendum is clearly the opposite of what the EU is looking for.
“I have frequently underlined that the laws, especially the Parliament’s Regulation, need to pass with the consensus of the opposition and government. It is difficult to understand this decision that goes against the comprehension spirit.
Holding a referendum on this case is not the way how you build consensus. This is a way to avoid dialogue and constructive cooperation. This is not the way to fulfil the necessary requests.
I have emphasized several times that the reform process should be stable, motivated and based on consensus. Only a political and constructive dialogue can bring forward the necessary reforms.
I strongly encourage all Albanian politicians to find an agreement for how to fulfil the key requirements, which are essential for the EU candidate status”, Fule declared.
The referendum request was signed by Prime Minister Berisha, the Parliament Speaker and 65 MPs of the majority. This initiative was considered illegal and non-constitutional by the opposition.
