Fuels: Competition Authority inspects market. Suspects for oligopoly

21/01/2015 00:00

The debate for the fuel market is expected to take other proportions
during the days to come. The Competition Authority might very soon take a
final decision about an investigation started months ago, on May of
2014, for suspicions on violation of fair competition. The deadline was
three months and it is now over.

Top Channel has learned that the experts of this institution have prepared the respective report, and now it is up to the Authority to give its opnion.

Confidential sources say that one of te hottest topics of this decision might be the repeal of instruction 17 of the Ministry of Finances. In 2008, to make it easier to collect taxes from fuels, the Ministry of Finances issued an instruction which reduced the market competition by turning all retail gas stations into agents of bigger companies.

The instruction doesn’t allow retail stores to compete in price, since it is decided by importing companies. Sources from the Ministry of Finances say that this instruction has caused debates within the Ministry itself.

What remains to be seen are the other measures of the authority. Unofficial sources say there might be punitive measures against companies that oeprate in the market for abuse.
