Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Freedom House report ranked Albania among the countries with partial
freedom, meaning that there are limitations in respecting the political
and civil freedoms.
A representative of the organization, Sylvana Kolezckowa, told Voice of America that Albania and Kosovo are facing similar problems, especially as regards lack of ability to work organized crime and prosecute political corruption in high levels.
Sylvana Kolezckowa described the countries in this category as places where democratic institutions do exist, but their functionality has very large problems. Albania is a NATO member and aspires to enter the EU. However, it is still listed as a partially free country.
Kolezckowa explains it by saying that the fact that Albania is still facing a wall of obstacles and rejections regarding membership is not a surprise, if you see the problems of some of the basic institutions that the European Union takes very seriously for the rule of law and implementation of the anti-corruption law, especially the judiciary.
Compared to one year ago, Albania is almost on the same level. This year it has received three points, different from the 3.5 taken one year. Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Bosnia are listed among the countries of our region that have partial freedom. Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro are ranked among countries with freedom.
