The former Interior Minister, Fatmir Xhafaj, who initiated the law for the Vetting of the Police, didn’t welcome the changes proposed his successor, Sander Lleshaj.
Xhafaj expressed his regret for the false alibis, as he called them, for not implementing the Vetting Law on time. He underlined that this process cannot be realized by the Service for Internal Matters and Complaints.
“The Police doesn’t belong to the political parties. It is a pillar of the rule of law. The Vetting Law remains a key instrument. It is regrettable that it wasn’t implemented on time, but was postponed with false alibis. However, it’s better late than ever. Changing a law is no heresy, but in my opinion, changes are not necessary in some cases, as they would damage the privacy of the process”, Xhafaj said.
