The former police chief of Elbasan in central Albania, Leonard Palushi, was declared guilty by the court today after he was arrested for abuse of office and then the charges were upgraded to corruption.
Palushi was sentenced to 2 years and four months in prison.
The name of the police commissioner, who was recently the police chief, appeared on the scene from the testimony of the repentant, Nuredin Dumani.
His words and the evidence collected by the SPAK special prosecutor’s office, shook the positions of several organized crime personalities in the country, one of them being Erion Alibeaj, who was allegedly informed regularly by Palushi, then head of the homicide department in the city of Elbasan.
In one case, it is suspected that Palushi was gifted a vehicle for his services to crime. Leonard Palushi pleaded not guilty, insisting that he served the law and the country.
The former chief also insists that he did not commit corruption. In the file examined by the special judge Erjon Çela, another episode is mentioned, where the former head policeman gave information about a pistol that turned out to have killed Emiljano Ramazanin.
The gun was found in the property of the Manhasa family, which temporarily misdirected the authorities to persons who had nothing to do with the murder.
Dumani’s confession sent 16 people to prison.
But others in unclear circumstances broke the police net and continue to be on the run, among them Ervis Martinaj and Talo Çela.
