Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future After the constant reports by Top Channel for the massacre held against
the Albanian forests during the last years, the environmental experts
asked the Albanian government officials to establish a moratorium.
Environmental expert, Sazan Guri, brought a panorama of the forest situation in the country during these years.
“In the 50s, 80% of the territory was with forests. In the 90s it was 34% and today we have only 9%. We have turned into a desert areas like Drenova and Lura”, Guri declared.
Forest experts brought to attention the high figures of lumber export that has caused the mass destruction of the forests in our country. Representatives from the civil society asked the planning of a draft law that would stop exports for five years.
“Let’s support the moratorium against the export of lumber. Let’s calculate and allow a controlled cutting of woods for the needs of the industry that is included in the political programs during campaigns. Let’s plan tangible projects for a forestation program, starting with parks and tourist areas, and especially the Lura tourist area, which not has turned into a catastrophe”, declared Mentor Kikia, from the Volunteer Corpus.
This declaration was signed by the representatives of the civil society and forest experts who were present in this meeting, who decided to plan a project for stopping illegal lumber businesses. After this draft the MPs will be asked to present it to the Commission and then in Parliament.
