UNDP offices in Tirana published the global report of direct foreign
investments for 2010, ranking Albania as one of the countries with the
best progress in the region.
“In 2010, direct foreign investments in Albania reached for the first time more than 1 billion USD, ranking Albania second in Southeastern Europe”, declared Zinebtouimi Benjelloun, UN coordinator in Tirana.
Foreign investments are considered as one of main sources that generate employment.
Direct foreign investments for the last four years have been 3.7 billion ALL, according to official data. But the number of employed people not only has not increased, but it has decreased with 18,000 more unemployed, compared to the end of 2006.
By comparing employment data with the foreign investments, there is a paradox, since the foreign capital that has entered Albania has not generated employment, at least not as much as for amortizing the unemployment effects caused by the closure of public enterprises or other reforms that cut jobs. Our economy might be in a restructuring phase, when the increase of productivity by the new technologies brought by foreign investments cuts jobs. But beside these reasons, the fact is that there were more employed Albanians 5 years ago, when foreign investments were only 200 million USD per year, than today that foreign investments are five times higher.
