Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future Dozens of businesses were completely destroyed by the fire that broke up
yesterday at the Food Market, Tirana. Merchants say that they suffered
incalculable losses and that they expect indemnification.
Besides the destroyed goods, another big loss is the burning of documents for unpaid bills. The head of Municipal Council 6 says that there are 32 businesses that have been damaged, with a damage of around 700.000 USD.
Police has arrested the suspect, a 26-year-old who has caused the fire while trying to light a firework.
The terrible fire shocked the entire Albanian capital, but fortunately, no one was hurt.
Many police forces and evacuated the area and the firefighters asked help from their colleagues of neighboring cities.
The biggest challenge for the firefighters was to keep the fire from approaching a gas station, which was situated only a few meters from the fire.
Only one of the residences took fire, while a series of small business shops were burned down completely.
The Socialist MP of this area, Sajmir Tahiri, declared for Top Channel that the firefighters’ intervention and that of other units should have been more efficient, and that the firefighters’ arrival was delayed.
The MP asked the Municipality to release a special fund for the merchants who had been damaged by the fire, and a formula for relieving them from taxes.
