Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The Finiq commune in Delvina, one of the most important for the
production volume of grains and other cultures is exploiting almost 80%
of the agricultural area. Different from the other areas in Southern
Albania, where the land is left barren, the farmers here are growing
dozens of hectares in corn, wheat and alfalfa.
But according to the head of the commune, the biggest agricultural challenges in this area are the lack of irrigation and drainage systems, which were destroyed after the 90s.
According to him, an investment in irrigation would eliminate the mechanical method cost and would supply water to 1800 hectares of agricultural land that are administered by 50 farmers. The project for the construction of the 6000 m irrigating canal has been promised by the government five years ago.
Finiq supplies grain crops for a considerable part of the Albanian market and has less subventions.
Finiq has 6700 residents and 80 big businesses, but however, their main profile is agriculture. Only in the last four years, the planted surface in this area has doubled thanks to the investments of farmers who have returned from emigration.
