Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future 11.000 people have entered Albania from the Kakavija checkpoint at the Border with Greece in the last two days.
The peak was on the Christmas eve and continued this morning. Compared to one year ago, this number is 30% smaller.
“I always return to Albania to celebrate the holidays with my relatives”, says one of the emigrants.
But the number of Albanians going abroad was higher, especially those who chose to celebrate Christmas with their relatives in Greece. 9000 people have crossed the border between 23 and 24 of December.
“People think that the main crisis is in Greece, but in Albania it’s worse”, one of the travelers says.
“I usually spend my Christmas in Athens, with my family, in a very warm atmosphere”, another one says.
2012 is the first year that had no long queues in the border checkpoints. The Albanian side of the border keeps working with four tolls in the entrance and four in the exit gates, while the Greek side works with three in both.
