Fatal costs of smoking

Despite being a poor country, the Albanians consume tobacco without calculating the financial and health costs.

According to the calculations made by the Public Health Institution, although we are a country with the cheapest cigarette price, the Albanian people consumes too much for smoking, since they smoke 1 to 3 packets a day, with an average price of 200 ALL per packet. But what happens when a family has more than one smoker? Although the financial calculations are private, the health damages touch even those who do not consume cigarettes.

“There are smokers who spend in 30 years, by smoking 2 packets a day, around 44.000 USD. If they smoke three packets a day, it mounts up to 75.000. This is only the economic cost, without calculating the health damage. More than 3.000 people die each year by diseases caused only by active and passive smoking, even the people who inhale other people’s smoke”, declared Roland Shuperka, anti-smoking specialist.

The anti-smoking law has stopped smoking in interior areas for a short time, but all bars and restaurants now allow people to smoke. Shuperka feels optimistic about the law, saying that it proved that it can be implemented, and only after four months, the bar owners will be the ones to not allow smoking inside their premises, because four months after the fine is placed, it returns in an execution order for bailiff agencies.

“The Task Force showed that this law can be implemented. If a subject is fined today and has not paid the money voluntarily, the subject will have the bank accounts blocked, together with the business equipments”, Shuperka declared.

The task force that worked only for four months has placed 230 fines, 60 of which have been paid, while the rest will be collected by bailiffs.
