Farmers on the bring of bankruptcy

The opposition leader, Edi Rama, traveled to Divjaka to have a closer look to the farmers of this area.

The owner of a green house says that he has invested millions of ALL taken in loans for the business, but rather than cultivating tomatoes and cucumbers during winter, the destination of the green house has changed.

“We cannot plant tomatoes and cucumbers because although this is a winter green house, we have no oil. I tried, but now I have nothing”, he says.

Oil is not the only problem for these farmers. “We have problems with the irrigation. There are no canals and the pump is out of order. We have rivers but no system to make use of them. After ten years, these lands will not be able to give even half of the production”, the farmers say.

Edi Rama expressed the vision of the Socialist Party in government, of how they will treat the concerns of the Albanian farmers.

“There are three pillars. The first is the irrigation and drainage system, for which we will make a massive investment so that we can recover the entire system. The second is the cost. Today it is impossible to have such an important investment, with only the land mounting up to 210 million ALL, and be obliged to plant only cabbages. This is a failure not for your fault, but for the state that has abandoned the village, rather than decreasing the production cost, such as oil, input and agricultural machinery. The third pillar is the guarantee of bringing this products to a market”, Rama declared.
