21 international experts, among them former ministers of economy, energy, presidents advisors, along with ministers of the new government cabinet, on the second day of the conference, “Next Generation Albania’’, revealed their views on issues related to the economy, employment and threats that menace economy.
“We dream to bring our country in Europe, – said the prime minister elected Edi Rama – and make it tangible for our citizens, in the new coexistence that will create competition and meritocracy. “
Leif Pragrotsky, former Minister of Trade and Industry in Sweden said that Albania should take great care with public debt which he considered as a risk. He suggested the new government should stop further involvement in the spiraling debt.
During discussions, the future Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Entrepreneurship, Arben Ahmetaj, listed as priorities of the Government dealing with public debt that the government should pay to the businesses. “It is about 400 million Euros in debt, – said Ahmetaj – that government should pay to Albanian businesses. Revitalization to increase production and subsequently the exports increase, including keeping the energy situation under control are two other priorities,” said Mr. Ahmetaj.
While Ellen Goldstein, of the World Bank said that Albania has all the symptoms of the economic problems facing Europe. According to her, Rama’ Government has to deal with four challenges. Prevention of a possible economic crisis, employment, service sector growth and sustainability of inherited skills in economy.
Mrs. Goldstein, focusing on the energy sector in Albania, requested immediate intervention by the government of Rama to ensure the continuation in normality, to prevent what she called “expected crisis in this sector during winter.”
The future Minister of Finance Shkelqim Cani, focusing on financial stability, said that he wants stability in the economy.
“The economy has entered a stage that I would prefer to use a modern word, interesting, but not without associating it with what is a very difficult reality. Of course, in this hard reality, the first things to do are the structural reforms, the new model and liberalization of the economy. We need to add transparency to the public regarding taxation and to understand where does the money come from and where is our money going,” Cani said.
Erion Veliaj, who is expected to be the head of Ministry of Social Welfare and Youth, focused on the employment situation in the country about which he said that “the primary need is partnership between the private sector and government on the creation of new jobs. Youth unemployment is still very worrying because the data show an unemployment rate of 30% of the youth. We want the new budget to have more budget for vocational training, rural development and to make agriculture more productive.”
“One of our plans is to encourage young people for entrepreneurial skills. Tell them that those who have interesting ideas will be promoted and encouraged.’
