Excise law takes effect

The new Excise Law that transfers the administration of this tax from
the Tax Office to Customs is accompanied with a strong increase of the
fiscal burden for some products, mainly coffee.

The old law provided a 30 ALLKg for unprocessed coffee and 140 ALL for imported processed coffee. This scheme has worked for many years now, in order to support the domestic product, since the processed products take an added value in our country.

But the transferring of the law under the Customs administration brings a new interpretation that increases the excise burden for unprocessed coffee several times. According to the law that enters in effect on October 1st, the excise measure will be the same for both types of coffee.

As consequence, the excise on coffee will be increased from 30 ALL per kg to 140 ALL per kg. Sources from the finances say that besides coffee, the new law also affects the raw oil that is refined in our country, which will be treated equally to processed oil.
