The Kukes airport is ready to welcome 5 airplanes at once. It was taken by the Albanian authorities in 2006, but it was never operational.
The last legal obstacles were removed two years ago, through an agreement with the Rinas airport, which no longer has the exclusivity of international flights.
Two years ago, the former Minister of Infrastructure, Edmond Haxhinasto, declared that they would take the necessary steps to make the airport operational.
The Minister said that two low-cost companies are looking to operate it, but the state should invest 3 million EUR.
Two years have gone by and nothing has changed with the Kukes airport. The companies have withdrawn, and the only hope is a Facebook status of Prime Minister Edi Rama on January 18th: “Finally a serious contact for the Kukes airport. Let’s see. I have trust on this”.
Kukes is the second civilian airport in Albania. It was built in May 2002 with funds from the United Arab Emirates. The position between Tirana and Prishtina, with a good road infrastructure on both sides of the border, makes it easy for possible passengers to arrive from both Albanian capitals.
