European Parliament meeting in Albania

06/12/2012 00:00

The meeting of the European and Albanian MPs in Tirana foresees the
discussion of some topics such as war against crime and corruption,
media freedom and the preparation of the next elections. In an interview
for Top Channel, the Head of the European Parliament delegation for
Balkan, Eduard Kukan, explained his agenda and his expectancies on the
next meeting.

TCH : What are the messages and topics to be focused on in the next meeting?

Eduard Kukan, Head of the European Parliament Delegation for Balkan: “The messages are that this meeting should be used for deep discussion on the current issues that are related with the further progress of Albania in the European path. The meeting will be held according to the conclusions of the European Council, which will clearly show what text will be addressed to Albania and its further development. I think that it will be a good idea to be considered what is the most efficient to show that Albania is seriously interested for progress in the European agenda.

We will also discuss all matters, starting from the internal political situation, the quality of the political dialogue, the situation in Parliament, regarding the passing of important laws, the economic situation, war against corruption and organized crime, the media freedom. All these issues will be included as always in the agenda of this meeting”.

TCH : One of the points of this calendar is the discussion for the preparation of the next elections.

Eduard Kukan :  “The election preparation is very important. The way how these elections will be held is very important for the future of Albania. To answer a priori to your next questions, I can say that it is not mentioned in the EU documents, in the European Council or Commission, that the elections are a condition for the future of Albania. The word “condition” is not mentioned. But certainly, the way how they will be held, how the ballots will be counted, how the results will be declared and if they will be contested or not, will be very important for the way how the EU institutions will see the situation in Albania. Everyone expects that the elections will be honest, democratic and that the situation of 2009 will not be repeated.

It is very important for the country. Your Parliament and your politicians had enough time to prepare a legislation and what they need. I’m hearing that there are technical problems with the electronic voting now, but I think that they know how to fix it. The elections will be an important test for Albania’s ambitions in the future”.
