Despite the fact that the presidential election is not a 13th condition
for Albania’s EU integration, the Danish Minister for Europe, Nicolai
Wammen, declared that the EU will follow the entire process very
closely.

“This is the first test that should be passed successfully”, he said for the presidential election.

“If you ask me if we are following the presidential elections closely, certainly that we will follow it and we have great expectancies and high standards about what is going to happen. This is a very big responsibility for the Albanian politicians. We expect the Albanian politicians to justify our expectancy”, Wammen declared.

During the joint press conference with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edmond Haxhinasto, Top Channel asked the Minister Wammen about the consequences if the political class will not be able to succeed with the electoral and parliamentary reform.

“Albania will be judged based on their merits. An electoral system that supports the democratic values and enjoys the country’s trust for a functional democracy is what is needed. The EU message is very clear. May 24th will be the first test of the development. As Mr. Fule has underlined, and even I, as the chairman of the next Presidency, reiterate that it is important to achieve an agreement for the main causes. It is up to Albania to realize the principle that the EU is waiting for, and which we will review in the autumn report”, Wammen declared.

Haxhinasto expressed his optimism that the Albanian political class will be able to find the common language in fulfilling the EU priorities.
