The EU Presidency declared that they are surprised by the Supreme Court
sentence that found of the former Deputy Prime Minister, Ilir Meta, not
guilty. The Danish Minister for Euroepan matters, Nicolai Uammen,
expressed his concern for the functionality of the rule of law and
democracy in Albania.

“As regards Albania, I welcome the recent cooperation between the government and the opposition for establishing a Parliamentary Commission for the electoral reform. But there are many concerns related with the functionality of the rule of law, and this includes the so-called “Meta” case, which surprised many of us. It is essential for the country to mark progress in the rule of law and democracy”, Nicolai Uammen declared, as Minister for the European Matters in Denmark.

Nicolai Uammen presented the priorities of the Danish Presidency in front of the European Parliament Foreign Committee, in which Albania would not have been mentioned if the Danish Minister would not have been asked about the plans of this Presidency for Albania and the other countries of the region that are still behind in the integration road, by Mr. Eduard Kukan, Chairman of the Euro-Parliamentary delegation for Balkan.

The functionality of the rule of law is one of the 12 key priorities that our country should fulfill for receiving the candidate status and opening the EU membership negotiations.
