EU requests delay tunnel construction

The Albanian government is facing serious difficulties regarding the
construction of tunnel roads, since most of the projects have been
planned with only one gallery, while the EU has changed the conditions,
according to Shqip newspaper.

The Deputy Minister of Transports, Ernest Noka, says that the Kardhiq-Delvine and the Rruga e Arberit road are planned with one gallery, while the EU directives are that tunnels longer then 500 m need two galleries, such as Thirra and Rreshen Kalimash.

The Rruga e Arbrit Road was planned with two tunnels, one 500 meters long and one 2.5 km long, but with only one gallery. The Kardhiq-Delvine tunnel is 900 m long.

The government is currently building the Kerraba Tunnel, for the Tirana-Elbasan highway, which is 4 km long and costs around 8 billion ALL. The Kalimashi tunnel was built with 28 billion ALL for 6 km.

Other projects are facing difficulties for the deadlines, such as Milot-Fushe-Kruje project, for which the government has asked another project, different to what the World Bank had asked for the project with two galleries. The Levan-Vlore project is also facing delays, due to some errors found in the bridges plans.

However, Deputy Minister Noka says that most of them will end by June 2012.
