EU, preventing floods

The environment changes and the inappropriate exploitation of the Mat
riverbed in the last years have caused 10.000 families to suffer floods.

European Commission environment experts, who are making studies in this area, say that the damages of the dike and the interventions at the Mat riverbed are what have caused the flooding of the houses in the villages Fushe-Kuqe, Milot, Shenkoll and Zejmen.

“As for the environment changes, the sea level has increased and there are expected many rainfalls and storms. Besides the private constructions, what must be really taken in consideration is the entire water collector of Mat River, and all institutions must cooperate to prevent floods”, declared Attila Furstond, project manager.

Only the study of this project costs 2 million EUR, and the implementation on terrain might go from 50 to 100 million EUR. But environment experts say that there is needed an institutional interference for suspending the licenses to all companies that exploit the Mat riverbed.

“Some of the preventive measures have to do with the rehabilitation of the dikes and regulation of the riverbed. But the role of the institutions is more important, because companies are removing great quantities of gravel from the riverbed. It is not only the technical part, but the law must be amended too. There is even an environmental issue here, especially for the copper mine and the solid waste storage. Another issue that hasn’t been treated yet is that of the sewage waters”, declared Dr. Merih Kerestea, EU environment expert.

This projects needs all necessary measures in terrain, so that the life of 45.000 people who live there will not be affected by the rainfalls of each year.
