EU officials for 12 priorities

Albania’s integrating process faced another important test with the EU.
During the third meeting of the
Stabilization-Association Committee in Tirana, the Albanian institutions will have
to present what has been achieved by the parties after the November 2011 agreement, and especially for the
realization of the 12 priorities.

On the first day of the European test, the EU officials aim to measure the progress in 7 of 12 priorities, including the electoral and parliamentary reform. The EU representatives also will be informed about the economic progress, together with the fiscal program.

“I am confident that the progress reached in the realization of priorities is evident, and we will have the possibility to see the Parliament functionality this afternoon and tomorrow. We also have good news from the electoral reform commission that so far has approved some chapters of this reform, such as the relations with the media or the punishments of those who violate the Electoral Code”, declared the Minister of Integration, Majlinda Bregu.

“I want to reconfirm the will of the governing majority for the immunity removal issue, as a step in the war against corruption. The enlargement is and will remain credible only if our progress will have a right evaluation, because this process requires a reliable commitment for Albania’s transformation and development. I believe that this will be based on merits, but let’s hope that it will happen in a near future for all of us”, she underlined.

Pierre Mirelle, Enlargement director at the EU for Western Balkans, who leads the operation, expressed his pleasure that Albania considers the integration as a national priority.

“As usually in these meetings, we measure the progress based on the commitment that derives from the Stabilization-Association Agreement, which we consider a performance in the implementations of the priorities that have been set for Albania in the European Commission, two days ago. Albania has valued the integration as a national priority. This is even more significant on the verge of the 100th year of independency. For this process to become successful and get implemented, there is something else, even more important: a national consensus”, Mirelle underlined.

“You have a strong consensus as regards the EU integration, and you have shown this three years earlier, with a Parliamentary resolution supported by all parties. Recently we have seen positive developments, such as the November agreement, which has produced encouraging results that mean that the consensus for integration is translated in concrete actions and reforms”, he declared.

Meanwhile, the EU ambassador in Tirana, Ettore Sequi, declared that he sees the 12 priorities as a challenge for Albania, but its realization shouldn’t be enough. The same significance has their translation in concrete acts, as he declared.
