EU criticized for enlargement

The EU Commission recommendation for Albania was criticized by Steven
Blockmans, a renowned scholar of the Centre for European Politic Studies
(CEPS), with its headquarters in Brussels.

Blockman analyzed the EU enlargement process where the proposition of the Commission for Albania is mentioned as an example for the decreased reliability.

“So that the enlargement process should not degenerate, EU must refrain itself from offering shallow forms of the EU candidate status, such as the one proposed for Albania in the strategy of October 10th, which is conditioned with the fulfilment of key measures in the judiciary, public administration reforms and a review of the Parliament’s regulation”, Blockmans declared.

Despite the short enthusiasm that is expected by Croatia’s membership, Blockmans predicts that the EU will keep being tired of enlargement, especially for aspiring countries with small economies, weak administration and corrupted law enforcement authorities.

“The EU requests for constant reform have fallen in deaf ears, especially for those political leaders who calculate votes for a remote EU membership. The result for the conditions is often false. This surface can be politically and economically more favourable in short terms, but it will be damaging for real progress in long terms”, Blockman underlined.

By the end of his analysis, Blockman advises the European Commission to find new ways of consolidating the enlargement area, in order to profit full support from the member countries and secure a stable implementation of pre-implementation conditions.
