ERE removes CEZ licence

The Energy Regulation Entity revoked the licence of the Czech Company that owned the electric power distribution in Albania.

ERE also appointed Sahit Dollapi as the new director of KESH, a decision that came after several conflicts with the Czech Company, which was accused of failing to fulfil the conditions as signed on the agreement with the Albanian government. The most important of these conditions were the failure to import electricity; the collective power cuts and the lack of financial balance sheets.

ERE warned CEZ to reflect and fulfil the conditions, but the Czech Company accused the government of creating great economic difficulties with large fines and unpaid energy bills by consumers but especially state institutions.

The conflict peaked with CEZ interrupting power supply to all aqueducts that had unpaid energy bills. This action created indignation among the population and obliged the government to secure a court order that obliged CEZ to stop power cuts until this issue was resolved.

The CEZ case is one of the biggest privatization failures in strategic sectors Albania.

CEZ: International arbitration

After the Energy Regulation Entity revoked their licence, CEZ Company claimed that the decision is illegal.

The Czech Company declared through a press statement on their official website that they will undertake all necessary steps by means of an international arbitration.

CEZ also opposes the appointment of the new state administrator who will manage the company, until the Albanian government will resolve the conflict and a second decision will be taken.

The CEZ administration claims that the decision is against the European standards and even the Albanian laws.

The Company declared that they will undertake all legal steps and will start an international arbitration.
