The European Parliament rejected the proposition of the Greek European MP, Notis Marias, (a request also made by the ECR), to discuss the Bularat incident in which a 35-year-old Greek extremist died in a shootout with Albanian Special Forces, after he had fired an AK-47 against a patrol of the Albanian police.
The members of the European Popular Party were also against this proposition. The European Socialists, Liberals and Green also voted against. Most of the European Left, including Gabriela Zimmer, abstained. The result was 48 votes in favor, 208 against and 20 abstains.
Notis Marias said that Katsifa had been executed by the Albanian police as part of a cleansing operation on the day when Greece celebrates its national holiday. According to him, the execution was supported politically by the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama.
He said that the Albanian authorities had refused to hand over the body for the relatives to bury. He also said that the police had used terror during the funeral.
He also said that the Greek minority in Albania is suffering systematic pressure, with Albanian authorities, according to him, destroying churches and homes of the Greek minority.
8 out of 10 Greek EMPs who were present voted in favor, including Eleni Theocharous, who was declared non-grata by the Albanian authorities.
