Engel: Nationalism is damaging

The American lawmaker, Eliot Engel, declared in an interview for VOA
that he is against the nationalist rhetoric that has started in Albania
and Kosovo.

He said that the relations between Albania and Kosovo are natural, but values that there should be no abuses with them, since it could be dangerous.

I am concerned for this rhetoric, because we fought more about Kosovo’s independence. It is natural that there are fraternal connections between Albania and Kosovo, but the comments for a Greater Albania can never be useful, since Kosovo is Kosovo and Albania is Albania”, Engel declared.

Engel, renowned for his pro-Albanian commitments, congratulated the people of Kosovo and valued the progresses achieved during this time.

“During the past five years, Kosovo has entered among the free and independent democracies of the world. Kosovo has been recognized by 98 countries and I am making efforts that other countries are added to the list, whenever I meet officials”, Engel declared, saying that the USA should commit more for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.

“I think that it is important for the US to play a major role in every process that is made with Kosovo. I told this to the former secretary Hillary Clinton and I will tell it to the current Secretary, John Kerry. I met Mrs. Ashton earlier the day and discussed about Kosovo. I told her that we need more progress with Kosovo, so that it can come closer to NATO and the EU”, the Congressman declared.

He favoured the visa removal for Kosovo, but underlined that Kosovo should listen to the demands of Brussels. “Corruption and Organized Crime cannot be fought with a magic wand. But if Brussels has required it, Prishtina should take it seriously”, Engel declared.
