Energy crisis returns

Top Channel has learned that a few days ago CEZ addressed an official
letter to the Energy Regulation Entity (ERE), saying that they are
unable to fulfill the legal obligation to import energy.

The Czech Company explains to the ERE that they are experiencing a difficult financial situation and have no money to import energy. The news is confirmed by official sources from within the ERE. But this letter is only the tip of the iceberg for the serious crisis that is involving the energy sector, not only financially but also for the productivity.

The stopped CEZ imports are drying out the water reserves of Albania, since the government is obliging KESH to supply the entire energy that is being consumed. According to official data, the water level at the Fierza Lake has fallen with more than 20 meters for just two months and is approaching its critical point.

The current water level is less than 270 meters and it is falling each day with 50 centimeters. If this situation will continue, the domestic production will be seriously endangered. Experts say for Top Channel that the country is facing an energy crisis and the alarm has also reached the government.

An urgent meeting was held yesterday between the Prime Minister and the energy sector leaders, where they discussed a series of scenarios, even those that a few times ago would be unimaginable. But the solutions aren’t many. To avoid the crisis until the first rains start, Albania will need to return to massive energy imports and experts calculate that this would need 15 to 20 million EUR monthly, money that the budget doesn’t have.

But even if the government will increase the debt by obliging the Albanian Energy Corporation to start importing, there is still the CEZ problem. The law foresees that if the Czech Company will not fulfill the legal obligation to import energy, the ERE will be obliged to take measures that start with a fine and if the situation will not change, the law provides harsher measures that will face the energy sector with dangerous scenarios not only for them but the entire economy of Albania.
