“Emigration, not a solution for Albanians”

The fact that thousands of Albanian citizens filed for economic asylum in EU countries, mainly in France and Netherlands, was used against the opening of the accession negotiations, arguing that Albania wasn’t ready for it.

The official figures from EUROSTAT show that 27,575 Albanians filed for economic asylum. The number is concerning, although 30% lower than one year ago.

Anke Holstein, Deputy Ambassador of Germany in Tirana, said in a roundtable that the situation has changed completely. “The number of asylum seekers from Albania is no longer a problem in Germany. This was resolved through good cooperation between both countries. The possibility for asylum for Albanian citizens has been excluded”, Holstein declared.

But the economic situation in Albania and Western Balkan remains difficult. A recent report of the Bank of Albania showed that the trend of the job market in Western Balkan is characterized by low employment levels, compared to European standards.

The entire region is facing a population shrinking due to the low births and emigration. 1/3rd of the population has already emigrated. The coinciding demand for jobs in Germany has created a German job market in the entire region.
