Emigrants’ investments

The Albanian emigrants are invited to invest in their country through a
program that aims promoting cooperation between the Diaspora and the
central and local governments in Albania, for local development.

“It has resulted successful when Albanian emigrants decided to copy in their country the business form treated in the countries where they have worked. They have returned with this experience and capital for investing in Albania”, says Kastriot Sulka, Deputy Prime Minister of Labor, Social Works and Equal Chances.

In this conference organized by the IOM and the Albanian Embassy in Belgium were present representatives form the Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Labor, Albanian Diaspora Association and representatives of the local administration in Shkoder and Kukes, since it is evaluated that the Albanian emigrants in Belgium are mainly from northern Albania.

“All the participators are Albanian emigrants in Belgium, potential investors. Most of them have their activities here, small businesses or they work in different industries here. Some of them invest in Belgium and have interest to invest in Albania too”, declared Teuta Grazhdani, director of the IOM project in Tirana.

After London in June, Belgium is the second destination. The program will hold similar meetings in USA, Italy and Greece, where most of the Albanian emigrants are located. Despite the desire, it results that the Albanian emigrants remain skeptical about the safety of their investments in their country.

“There are many Albanians in England and Belgium, interested in finding ways to enter the homeland market with their investments. They are interested about the environment, the guarantees and safety of their investments, their protection and they also want to satisfy their desire for investing in their own country”, explains Thimi Nika, specialist at the National Institution of the Diaspora at the Foreign Ministry.

The main revenues from the Albanian emigrants in Albania come through the financial help for their families, but the remittances have significantly reduces in the last five years, as shows a study of the World Bank.
