Emigrants flock border checkpoints

With the New Year’s celebration just over, the border customs
checkpoints have started working with travelers flocking the border
gates, making the Kapshtica checkpoint at the Greek border the busiest
of all.

Today, travelers rushed from both sides of the border, while the Greek gates worked with reduced tolls, creating difficulties with the traffic.

The Albanians started working on January 2nd with 9 tolls, six of which in the exit gages and three in the entrances. The Greek side started working with only one toll, causing long queues of vehicles.

The situation was normalized after 10:00, when the Greek opened four other tolls, after a request of the Albanian side for easing the traffic.

The Kakavija custom checkpoint started with the travelers circulation, but the flux was unaffordable.

The movements of the last two days has been almost insignificant, but January 3rd was the day when people flocked the border, mainly emigrants who are returning to their jobs in Greece.

Kakavija official sources say that only 160 citizens and 500 vehicles have crossed the border to Greece yesterday, while 1000 citizens and 350 vehicles have entered the Albanian territory.

Many emigrants that work in Greece returned home for the New Year’s celebrations. It is expected that the same number will return to Greece these days. The Albanian side in the custom checkpoint has been prepared for the situation, by significantly increasing the number of tolls.
