The Albanian Foreign Minister, Edmond Panariti, held a meeting with the Greek
Ambassador in Tirana, Leonidas C. Rokanas, discussing about the passport
toponym issue and the need to find urgent solution to this problem.
According to the Ministry, Panariti declared that the Albanian Government has introduced a proposition for resolving this issue, based on international practices. They’re open for dialogue so that this problem can be addressed to as soon as possible and in a definite way.
The two diplomats agreed to intensify the negotiations and resolve this situation through the work-groups established in the respective countries.
Minister Panariti also asked for official information about the interpretation of the Schengen Code by the Greek border authorities, so that the Albanian citizens can have clear instructions to calculate their movements between Greece and Albania, in order to avoid penalizations at the border checkpoint.
The Greek border authorities have rejected several Albanian children who were born in Greece, because their birthplace name was written on the passport only in the Albanian language, and not in Greek or English.
