Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future 200 families from the Pajun village, 15 km from the city of Elbasan, in
absence of a bridge are obliged to cross a spring each day on their
feet.
They’re only five km from the Elbasan-Peqin national road, but the high waters make it impossible for them to communicate with the rest of the country.
Although they live in a low area, they have to stay isolated for nine months. They feel disappointed and abandoned by the government leaders who visit them only on electoral campaigns.
“Nothing has changed in 20 years of democracy, although we vote in every election”, one of the residents declared.
Their children are almost illiterate and the spring waters put their life in danger on a daily basis.
If this wasn’t enough, doctors are unable to enter their village. Pregnant woman give birth at home, without medical assistance. Sick patients are unable to go to hospital, while doctors can visit them only when waters are calm.
The Head of the Paperr commune declared that he is aware of the difficult situation that the 200 hundred families are facing, but he adds that the commune is punished for political reasons. The government hasn’t given any grant for five years and the commune incomes cannot carry out such an investment.
“It is expensive to build it. The heavy November rains have damaged part of the road. We wrote to the Directory of Civil Emergencies at the Interior Ministry, but we had no answer”, declared Shefqet Bullari, Head of the Paperr commune.
Bullari says that his office has written dozens of times to the Directory of Civil Emergencies, the Interior Ministry and the Prime Minister, without receiving any answer.
Elbasan-Gramsh road blocked
The National Elbasan-Gramsh road has been blocked since Friday. The Devoll River has covered the Shushica Bridge, making it impossible for drivers to cross it on their vehicles.
Police is on site and has blocked the bridge. This situation happens every time that there are heavy rains, and the road is freed only when the weather gets better.
