Hundreds of residents at the “5 Maji” area in Elbasan, Albania, have
been living for more than 10 years together with sewage waters. This
neighbourhood was populated informally during the ‘90s, after the
collapse of the communist regime, and the government hasn’t made any
intervention in most of it.

The open canals often cause epidemics and put the children’s life in danger. This situation becomes alarming during heavy rains, when waters mix and flood houses. Residents say that they have been living with the sewage waters for the last 12 years.

The Elbasan Municipality says that before intervening, this neighbourhood must become legalized and urbanizes, and no interventions have been made for years now. The Elbasan Municipality, in the annual meeting with citizens “Participating in Budget”, declared that the rehabilitation of this are is an emergency and they are waiting for the approval of Budget 2013.
