EC, border inspection

The European Commission proposed today a new system based on the EU Schengen area. Cecilia Malmstrom declared that this system allows an
efficient management and supervision for the rules of the member
countries.

“The essence of this approach are the inspection visits in a border by Frontex the teams from the European Commission and teams from other countries, pre-announced or not, for verifying the implementation of the Schengen Rules. This will allow us to identify irregularities earlier”, Malmstrom declared.

With the new regime, the inspection in the interior border for pre-announced events, such as sportive ones, will be undertaken by the Commission after the respective member country will be warned beforehand and will be supported with qualified majority by the European Council.

But a member country enjoys the right to establish border control for five days in the case of a terrorist attack or any other unpredicted development.

“We are building a common approach to the protection of our common interests, for avoiding situations when the member countries read in the newspapers that the neighbors have established border control”, Malmstrom underlined.

The Commissioner Malmstrom declared that this proposition doesn’t change the current situation and it provides that the verification in north will be made in cases of a serious danger for the public or for international security.
