President Ilir Meta has reacted after a study by “The Economist” which predicts the pessimistic variant that Albania in 2100 may have only 860 thousand inhabitants.
The president stresses that the speed of aging in the country is shocking.
“The rate of aging is also staggering: the average age of the population this year is 37.2 years, but in 10 years it is projected to rise to 42.1 years,” he wrote.
“Although governments in the short term can benefit from emigration as it fictitiously lowers unemployment rates or increases remittance income, in the long run the neglect and aggressive non-addressing of this phenomenon would have catastrophic consequences especially for a country like ours”, he further writes.
