
The recent political climate in Albania was the key word in the Stabilization Association meeting between Albania and the EU. This fourth inter-parliamentary meeting concluded with the approval of a declaration, in which are included 6 recommendations for pushing the integration processes forward.
The first point of the declaration expresses the hope for fulfilling the 12 key recommendations, now that the political storms are gone. The second point was the advancement of the reforms required by the EU and the encouragement of the politicians in Tirana for being involved in the consolidation and implementation of the agreements reached by the political factors, which is the second point of the declaration.
The rest of the declaration greets the passing of the qualified majority laws, the need for consolidating the rule of law and justice system, as the main way to fight corruption, the main request of the EU to Albania.
The Socialist MP, Valentina Leskaj, explained the opposition’s consensus for approving the declaration, underlining that the time factor should create a reliable product for the EU.
On behalf of the Albanian government, the Minister of Integration, Majlinda Bregu, made a summary of the Albanian government efforts for fulfilling the 12 EU key recommendations, in which Albania failed.
Mrs.Bregu declared that there has been progress in the implementation of the 12 key priorities, and that the Ministry she leads is formulating a new action plan for the 2012-2015 period, with new elements that will bring the integration process forward.
The Minister of Integration greeted the initiative undertaken by the opposition for electing the candidacies for the Ombudsman.
Ambassador Ettore Sequi mentioned Brussels’ perception about the recent developments in Albania, underlining that the electoral reform is a very important element in the integration processes that must end before the next elections. Sequi underlined the necessity of the Parliamentary reform, where the European parliamentary regulation should be taken as a model.
The law implementation reform is in another phase that should be realized. the EU ambassador also mentioned the media freedom issue, declaring that the European Commission is closely following the developments for this matter.
Eduard Kukan, the head of the European Parliamentary Delegation, considered the visit in Tirana as a challenge for finding a solution to the integration processes that have been delayed for two years.
“It is necessary for Albania to catch the next train that goes to the EU, they should not lose anymore time”, Kukan declared.
The head of the Albanian delegation, Fatos Beja, declared that the fulfillment of the political criteria enters a new phase, because the political climate will allow us to win the lost time. Speaking about the economic situation in Albania, Fatos Beja declared that our country is facing the European economic crisis with success.
The approval of the declaration is another positive step of the Albanian political class, opening a new chapter in the relations with Brussels, which is followed by another important challenge: the implementation of this agreement in the future.
