Linda Rama: Between Family, Work and Albania’s Future The majority appealed the media to not fall prey to misinterpretations
of the Constitutional Court decision on on the referendum against the
waste import law.
Ilir Rusmali, DP Chairman of the Commission of Laws, declared that the Constitutional Court only accepted the request for the referendum, but it will not stop the waste import, as it is being interpreted.
“The Constitutional Court says that the Albanians are the ones who will decide. They did not stop the law, they did not prejudge. The citizens’ will to decide on this matter. They gave them the right to decide. That’s it”, Rusmali declared.
The majority says that those who support the referendum are not being honest. If the Albanians approve the referendum request to repeal laws that allow waste import, it means that Albania will receive any kind of waste, without any legal limitation.
“Because the referendum request opens the gates for every kind of import, and we shouldn’t allow abusers who keep this position for other dishonest reasons”, Rusmali declared.
Rusmali said that by approving the request to start a referendum for the three integration laws, the majority proved that they respect the sovereign rights of the Albanians, so that they can use direct democracy. Rusmali answered indirectly to a question made by the Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule, who declared that the consensus is built with agreements and not referendums.
“Direct democracy improves the democratic system in Albania, doesn’t damage it”, Rusmali declared.
