DP celebrates 23rd anniversary, Basha: Let’s unite

The Democratic Party was founded 23 years ago as the first step of the
Albanian people towards political pluralism, as students asked in their
protests. Today, in opposition, the Democratic Party celebrates the 23rd
anniversary. The ceremony at the Palace of Congresses started with a
short documentary showing the key moments of the Democratic Party
political path.

Party leader Lulzim Basha declared that the Democratic Party has always been and will always be the party of freedom, national interest and western vocation. He thanked the people who contributed in this political force through the years, with some of them already passed away.

“This is a day for honoring, commemorating, reflecting and thanking. Today we honor the foundation, and we look forward, we greet the future. We are the biggest family of democrats that has made the most positive history-making changes. Some dear members have left us. We honor Azem Hajdari, founder and high leader of the Democratic Party, until the moment when he was killed by leninists. We commemorate Gramoz Pashko, the liberal-democrat; Pjeter Arbnori, the Mandela of the Albanians; Sokol Olldashi, an initiator, leader, Parliament Member, lawmaker and opposition man who is being missed by everyone”, Basha declared.

“In these 23 years, the Democratic Party has seen beautiful and difficult days. It has faced democratic changes, has led Albania’s European Union integration, becoming a member of the Council of Europe, a member of NATO, we liberalized the visa and thanks to our reforms, today we expect the status”, Basha declared.

Certainly, these are not the best days for the Democratic Party, and for this reason Basha appealed for unification, maybe by inviting other right wing parties, such as the New Democratic Spirit of Bamir Topi.

“Our new challenge is for a new beginning, for reunification, for returning as a majority with new energies and new ideas for the developed Albania. We will achieve a developed Albania, the challenge that started with a new perception of our mission in opposition. A strong frontal opposition, without causes and based only on facts. Defenders of democracy from illegality. Our challenge is opening the Democratic Party towards a new generation, and reunification”, Basha declared.

In this party were present the Parliament Speaker, Ilir Meta, and higher representatives of the ally parties, members of the diplomatic body, together with religious leaders.
