The United States support Albania’s accession to the European Union.
During the proof session in front of the Senate vice-Commission for
European Matter, the United States Ambassador appointed to Tirana by
President Barack Obama, Donald Lu, made several positive declarations
about our country.
One of them was Albania’s European Union accession. The high-rank American diplomat declared that he fully supports Albania’s goals.
“Albania’s economy has experienced growth during the years, but same as the economies of several other ally countries, Albania has not progressed during the past two years. Two are the best options for its recovery: first, Albania’s ability to undertake important economic reforms, in order to create a healthier environment for businesses, and secondly, the strengthening of Albania’s economic partnerships with the European Union and the United States”, Lu declared.
Considering Albania an excellent ally of America, Lu explained that his priorities will be the efforts to reinforce Albania’s democratic institutions, an increase of the support of the Albanian Armed Forces to the level of all NATO allies, and the encouragement of US businesses in Albania.
The diplomat valued the past parliamentary elections, and emphasized that the fight against corruption is one of the main challenges of the new government.
“These elections were the best that our country has ever held. There was a peaceful power transition, but democracy is not only with the elections. We would encourage the leaders of both parties to keep fighting the organized crime, traffic and corruption. The United States must continue to support the increasing voice of the civil society, the protection of minorities, the independence of the judiciary and the responsibility of politicians”, Lu declared.
For being a small country of only three million, Albania is giving a great contribution and the United States must support and modernize its Armed Forces. We need to help Albania to fight corruption and increase responsibility within the army, so that it can complete the highest standards of a NATO ally”, Lu declared.
Donald Lu is a career diplomat who has served for more than two decades at the United States State Department, working in new democracies coming out of the Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe.
